Certificate in Cybersecurity (Foundations)

This graduate Certificate requires satisfactory completion of three (3) graduate level courses (9 credits) as detailed in the program requirements below. Each Certificate program course must be completed with a grade no lower than a B-; the overall GPA of the courses in this Certificate must be no lower than 3.0.

Admission Requirements for the Certificate in Cybersecurity (Foundations)

  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 system.
  • Applicants must have undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or related disciplines. Applicants with degrees in other disciplines may be admitted depending on their experience in the relevant disciplines.
  • Applicants must have programming experience in a high-level language (e.g. C, C++, java, python) and familiarity with basic networking protocols and operating systems.
  • International applicants must demonstrate a satisfactory level of proficiency in the English language if English is not their first language. The University requires an official TOEFL score of at least 550 on paper-based or 79 on Internet-based tests. TOEFL scores more than two years old cannot be considered official. Alternatively, IELTS can be accepted in the place of the TOEFL. The minimum IELTS score is 6.5 overall with no individual sub-score below 6.0.

Concentration Certificates

The graduate Cybersecurity certificate program offers certificates in each of the following four cybersecurity concentration areas: (a) Secure Systems, (b) Security Analytics, (c) Security Management, and (d) Secure Software. Applicants must select one of these four areas when they apply to the program.

Admission Requirements for each concentration Certificate

The graduate concentration Certificates on Secure Systems, Security Analytics, Security Management and Secure Software have the following admission requirements for each one of the offered certificates:

  • Applicants must hold the Certificate in Cybersecurity (Foundations) from the University of Delaware.
  • Applicants who already have a cybersecurity certificate from the University of Delaware may reapply to pursue a new certificate on a different cybersecurity area.
  • Applicants must have programming experience in a high-level language (e.g., C, C++, java, python) and familiarity with basic networking protocols and operating systems.
  • Students already enrolled in a graduate cybersecurity program at UD can also register for a Cybersecurity certificate program at the same time.

Program Requirements for the Certificate in Cybersecurity (Foundations)

Each course in this Certificate must be completed with a grade no lower than a B-; the overall GPA of the Certificate in Cybersecurity courses must be no lower than 3.0.

Applicants must select three courses from the following:

  • CPEG 665 – Introduction to Cybersecurity
  • CPEG 671 – Pen Test and Reverse Engineering
  • CPEG 672 – Applied Cryptography
  • CPEG 676 – Secure Software Design
  • CPEG 694 – System Hardening and Protection
  • CPEG 695 – Digital Forensics
  • CPEG 697 – Advanced Cybersecurity

Program Requirements for each concentration Certificate

Each certificate requires satisfactory completion of three (3) graduate-level courses (9 credits) from within the list of graduate cybersecurity courses corresponding to each area.

Each course must be completed with a grade no lower than a B-; the overall GPA across all certificate and/or MS graduate courses must be no lower than 3.0. If a course is completed with a grade lower than B- or the overall GPA is lower than 3.0, students are allowed to repeat the corresponding course or select alternative courses to satisfy the minimum grade and/or GPA requirements for the certificate.

Any particular course can only be applied towards a single certificate, and students can earn credits by registering to either on-campus (in-person) or online course sections (14-week or 7-week courses). All cyber courses (on-campus or online) are considered at parity for credit purposes in all cybersecurity degree programs.

Certificate students who are also enrolled in an M.S. or Ph.D. program at UD can only apply earned credits towards either the M.S./Ph.D. degree or the Cybersecurity certificate (but not both).
