Why become a teacher?

The answer is that good teachers can literally change lives! Teachers educate, inspire, mentor and protect students on their journies toward life beyond high school. Along with families, they are tasked with nurturing human beings who are ready to take on college or other training and ultimately careers. Teachers make a difference in the lives of families in communities both big and small. As Malala Yousefzai has said, "One book, one pen, one teacher can change the world."

Across the country, including in the state of Delaware, there are teacher shortages in several important areas including STEM and foreign language subjects. In addition, students in high-poverty schools are more likely to be taught by those with less experience and fewer credentials such as having adequate subject matter knowledge. So there is a tremendous need for well-trained teachers in all subjects who can work in diverse settings and meet the needs of all students.

Job Stability and Benefits

People who choose to become teachers know that it is not because it is the most lucrative profession. Nevertheless, there are financial reasons for choosing a teaching career that you should know.

Unlike many professions, public school teachers generally work under contracts that outline a predictible schedule for increased salaries based on length of service and training. There also are opportunities for additional compensation through such activities as coaching and advising student groups.

In addition, teachers generally receive low-cost comprehensive health and welfare benefits for themselves and their families. And, as far away as it may feel as a college student, some day you will want to retire. Most teachers are more likely than others to be eligible for state pensions that offer predictable retirement incomes.
