Students

Welcome New Students
At the English Language Institute, we work hard to meet or exceed our students’ expectations so that they have an enriching academic, professional and cultural experience. To do this, we provide our students with many resources so that they can be successful in their classes and so that they can become involved in campus life.
Arrival Information
What to expect when you arrive at the ELI
We try to make your arrival go as smoothly as possible!
Our Arrival Information page helps new students to plan their arrival in Delaware, including airport pick-up, housing, what to pack, etc.
Housing Options
Where can I live as an ELI student?
The ELI offers several housing options to students. Students can live with American families, in apartments, or in our Global Community. The housing options available to students depend on their program (because some programs have specific housing requirements). We even offers housing to students who are traveling with their family!
Dining Options
Where can I eat while I am studying at the ELI?
There are several dining options for ELI students. Some students buy a University meal plan, while others will eat with their homestay hosts. Some students choose not to buy a meal plan and will instead cook their meals or purchase them in many cafes in the Newark area.
Health and Medical
There are several health-related things that new students must know before they begin their program at the ELI.
All ELI students are required to prepare medical documents before they come to Delaware. They are also required to get certain vaccines (i.e., immunizations) and medical tests, and they must purchase health insurance.
Financial Information
Quickly access instructions and links to make payments to the ELI, learn about ELI scholarships, find housing options and see program pricing.
Get Involved!
What can I do for fun in Delaware?
Studying at the University of Delaware ELI is a once in a lifetime experience! To get the most out of your time here, we highly encourage our students to participate in many activities and to take advantage of the services at UD and the ELI.
Academic Resources
As an ELI student, you have the amazing opportunity to study in one of the most respected English programs in the United States. By challenging yourself in our programs every day, you will improve your English skills and be one step closer to achieving your goals.
We know that our programs are rigorous, so we offer many resources to help our students to be successful.
You can also find answers to many of your questions about your class schedule and the systems (UD SIS, Canvas, etc.) on the ELI Registrar FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page.
