The Residence Life & Housing Team

Context of the Position

Under the supervision of a Residence Hall Coordinator or Assistant Director and the general direction of Assistant Directors and/or Associate Directors, the Graduate Hall Director (GHD) will work within the assigned residential community to create living environments that facilitate positive learning experiences and support the academic mission of the University. The GA provides leadership to staff and student leaders in their community and partners with students to develop vibrant communities which encourage student engagement, community contributions, a free exchange of ideas, and the cultivation of skills and knowledge so that students may become citizens and leaders in our increasingly global society.

Within each residence hall, opportunities exist for students to become involved and make meaningful contributions that will improve the experience of residence hall students. The primary role of the GA is to support those efforts through the supervision of Resident Assistants and assisting with the execution of initiatives that provide residents the opportunity to take on leadership roles and make contributions to their floor community. The GA can expect to plan and execute training and development opportunities for Resident Assistants and student leaders. Most of these duties are expected to be coordinated and facilitated in person in the residence halls.

Graduate positions are 20 hours a week. However, non-traditional assistantship hours (including evenings and weekends) are to be expected. This position is required to live on campus in a one- bedroom apartment. This will be in the assigned residence hall area where possible.

It is essential that the Graduate Hall Director be in frequent communication and consultation with their supervisor, ensuring that the supervisor is knowledgeable about the operation and status of the community in the event of needing to assist or facilitate resolution of an issue in the Graduate Hall Director’s absence.

The contract dates for this position are September 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025. The position will begin training prior to the contract start date. Graduate students are expected to work during Winter Session. Graduate Assistants will be given the opportunity to work and attend training in July in conjunction with other Residence Life & Housing Staff. Summer hours would be compensated through a separate hourly wage contract.

Major Responsibilities

Supervision and Leadership

  • Directly supervise and facilitate the development of a team of 7-15 Resident Assistants to enhance student learning through engagement, encourage student-led programs, ensure sound operation of the residence halls, and facilitate program plan initiatives. This is done through weekly staff meetings and regular one on one meetings with each Resident Assistant.
  • Implement major departmental initiatives related to Office of Residence Life & Housing program plan and program plans and successfully lead a team of Resident Assistants in this process.
  • Constructively manage personnel issues and conflicts, respond to job-related issues, and recommend appropriate solutions for the team.
  • Complete periodic performance appraisal of student staff.

Student Engagement

  • Direct and assist Resident Assistants in promoting responsible student behavior that benefits individual students and the whole residence hall community
  • Develop a positive image and presence in assigned area in order to develop connections with residents and create caring personal and community relationships
  • Promote and support student leadership opportunities, Neighborhood Empowerment Teams (NET), Resident Assistant Internship & Exploration (RAILE), and Student Initiated Programs (SIPs).
  • Help residents understand their rights and responsibilities as good citizens by explainin and enforcing policies and procedures. Work to solve community and individual student problems.
  • In consultation with supervisor, assist in the coordination of on-site and front-line response to crisis situations, including those that are highly complex in nature and may be life threatening. Serve in a live-in capacity to provide non-clinical student counseling, student mediation, crisis intervention, and referral services. Identify critical issues, assess student behavior and communicate effectively with supervisor to formulate response (educational and student conduct) to student concerns.
  • Review incident reports, assign cases, educate staff and students about University Code of Conduct, Residence Hall Regulations, and fire and safety codes, and facilitate RHR meetings as assigned.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the opening and closing of assigned residence halls at the beginning and end of fall, spring, and Winter Sessions, as well as break periods
  • Participate in the implementation of on-campus housing communication strategies including sending newsletters and department marketing.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the StarRez occupancy management system and provide assistance to students as they navigate various processes.
  • Work cooperatively with other University offices such as the Department of Public Safety, and Facilities in response to day-to-day functioning of the halls. Address safety concerns, custodial and maintenance concerns, and coordinate promotion of services and resources.
  • Oversee the scheduling of student staff for duty, office hours, security rounds, and distribution of U.S. and Campus Mail. Oversee key, access card, and security systems management, and room changes.
  • Identify, report and advocate for maintenance concerns throughout the community.
  • Respond to facility emergencies.
  • Coordinate administrative, student staff development and programming budgets for the assigned residential area.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or other members of the Residence Life & Housing leadership team.

Departmental Support

  • Serve on a multi-tier on call rotation to provide non-clinical student counseling, student mediation, crisis intervention, and referral services.
  • Assist with the planning, development, and implementation of large scale Residence Life and Housing events and initiatives as assigned, including committee participation and on- site support
  • Assist with opening logistics, major programs, and move in processes
  • Participate in all department-wide staff recruitment, selection, and training activities, including training and selection for Resident Assistants (RAs)
  • Attend periodic departmental meetings as assigned/coordinated by supervisor in addition to one-on-one meetings with supervisor
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on departmental, area, or in-hall needs

Qualifications

Graduate Assistants must be full-time, matriculated students in a graduate program to be eligible for this, or any graduate assistantship. Additionally, the Graduate Assistant must meet all requirements of the University of Delaware Graduate Student Appointment and must abide by all policies and guidelines specified by the Office of Graduate and Professional Education.

  • A genuine interest in and willingness to work with students.
  • An understanding of student attitudes, concerns, and issues.
  • Creativity and the capacity to successfully facilitate and guide learning for student and professional audiences through presentations and workshops

  • Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, assist in the development and execution of diversity and equity programs, workshops, and events that include but are not limited to cultural celebrations, Ujima.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the creation of professional staff and resident assistant training.
  • Collaborate with campus organizations and departments to promote diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Conduct research on best practices in diversity, equity, and inclusion to inform program development.
  • Assist in the collection and analysis of data to assess the impact of diversity initiatives.
  • Contribute to the creation and dissemination of educational materials related to diversity and inclusion.
  • Collaborate and expand knowledge of DEIJ topics through conversation and training
  • Serve as a member of the RLH Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.• Complete assessment projects that inform improvements to RLH program and services
  • Assist in the coordination of UJIMA supporting staff in their intersecting identities

  • Assist in the execution of the program plan, a yearlong educational plan of initiatives created to promote student learning, by implementing initiatives directly, coordinating implementation with groups of RAs, and through general promotion and support, with specific focus towards leadership development and civic engagement skill-building including but not limited to the following:
    • Developing content for various newsletters and educational campaigns
    • Coordinate schedules and logistics for campus partnership programming
    • Assisting with the advisement of Resident Student Association
    • Coordinate logistics of Resident Assistant Internship and Leadership Exploration (RAILE) program
    • Develop content and provide support to the monthly Cultural Celebrations series
    • Assist with various departmental diversity, equity, and inclusion initatives
  • Promote and support academic enrichment (e.g., tutoring, study skills) initiatives within the residence halls.
  • Assist with UD Decision Days and Blue and Gold Days, including creation of marketing materials as directed.
  • Provide support across campus as needed to facilitate individual and small-group conflict mediations and Residence Hall Regulations meetings
  • Support in-hall student and Resident Assistant programming by shopping for events
  • Complete assessment projects that inform improvements to RLH program and services
