A PERSONAL COMPUTER (PC) IS NOTHING MORE THAN A THIRD GENERATION SLIDE-RULE.
It was true for the slide-rule and it was true for the pocket calculator and it is true for the PC namely one can not live without the best tools available.
NOT HAVING A PC IS A STATUS SYMBOL.
It proves you have sufficient people working for you, so you do not need one.
SOME DAY IN THE NEAR FUTURE ALL NEW EMPLOYEES IN ANY COMPANY OR ORGANISATION WILL GET A PC WITHOUT JUSTIFICATION.
In 1955 a manager had to sign for issuing a slide-rule, in 1960 they were part of the stationary.
In 1970 a manager had to sign for issuing a pocket calculator, in 1975 no justification was asked any more.
In 1985 a manager had to sign for issuing a PC, in 1990 you will only be asked which type you want.
IN THE FUTURE THERE WILL BE TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE:
THOSE THAT CAN AND THOSE THAT CANNOT WORK WITH COMPUTERS.
You will be out of date if you cannot handle computers. There is no problem for the man that retires early 1990 with gardening as hobby, but there is a problem for the 40 year old that has missed the computer boom at the university and still has 20 years to go in the company. He better gets up to speed on computers !!
A PC MUST BE PORTABLE (the slide-rule and the pocket calculator were too) or THE EMPLOYEE SHOULD HAVE ONE AT HOME.
In high workload situations also homework can be done efficiently.
USER FRIENDLINESS IS PRIORITY NUMBER ONE, IT SAVES A LOT OF TIME.
Many, and in particular older people, are afraid of the complexity of the computer and rightly so. It should save time, not cost time. So far the Apple Macintosh is the champion!!
TODAY ALL FIRMS THAT PRODUCE PCS ARE USER FRIENDLY ENOUGH, ARE IN COLOUR, HAVE GIANT MEMORIES, ARE PORTABLE OR HAVE PORTABLE LITTLE SISTERS THAT CAN BE TAKEN HOME, CAN BE HOOKED UP TO THE MAIN FRAME AND HAVE SUFFICIENT SOFTWARE TO DO ALL OUR WORK. THEY WILL BE OUT OF DATE THREE YEARS LATER THOUGH, BUT WHO CARES IF THEY PAY OUT IN FOUR MONTHS TIME??
