Below is the message that I normally send to students by e-mail at the beginning of the term.
Enrollment and access to Sakai
If you are pre-enrolled, you should be able to access the materials on Sakai by the first day of classes.
If you enroll on the first day of classes or later, you may have to wait 2 days before you can access the materials on Sakai.
In either case, keep checking Sakai
to see whether you can get in.
My primary purpose in sending this message is to make sure you know what materials
you have to purchase for the course and to give you access to at least
some of the online course materials while you are waiting to get onto
Sakai.
Materials to purchase:
You need to have these three items:
Forney, Kristine; Machlis, Joseph. The Enjoyment of Music.
10th ed., shorter version.* New York: W.W. Norton, 2007. BE SURE TO
GET THE 10TH EDITION, SHORTER VERSION.
The above textbook is supposed to includes a Student Resource DVD;
make sure you have this additional DVD with your book order.
The Norton Recordings.
10th ed., shorter version. [4 CDs].*
New York: Sony Music Special Products, 2007. NOTE: These recordings
apparently are routinely sold with the textbook, but check to be
sure. With the Forney textbook you should have these four Norton
Recordings CDs as well as the Student Resource DVD mentioned just
above. (Furthermore, given what is required by the quiz-assignments
in this course, students should not rely on a subscription to Norton's
online listening lab as a substitute for the Norton CDs, because the
audio selections with the listening lab are incomplete.)
Wherever you
order these materials from, make sure that you get all three, and that
the dealer doesn't send you more than one copy of each.
If you go to the UDel Bookstore's website (http://www.udel.edu/bookstore), after you enter the course information
and choose "View Textbook List", you'll see a set of three packages to choose from (as of Aug. 18, 2010):
Look for the item called
"ENJOYMENT OF MUSIC,SHORTER-W/DVD+4 CDS" (2nd in this chart). This apparently is the
only "required" package that you should get (if you order from the UDel Bookstore) in order to have all
the materials listed above. The other two packages listed at the
bookstore are the textbook with DVD as one item and the 4 CDs as
another
item (mistakenly labeled "Norton Scores").
You can use the ISBN numbers(s) to order item(s) from other vendors,
such as Amazon, etc. You can also order these items directly from
the publisher W.W. Norton.
You have
also the option of purchasing a subscription to an online version of the
textbook.
See the syllabus/policies page for the course -- linked below -- for
more information
about the materials. If you buy the textbook subscription online
from Norton, you'll need to purchase the CD and DVD separately from
Norton, too.
In any case, you need to get the textbook, DVD, and CDs right
away. If you're having trouble getting them, you need to contact
me right away, too.
Online materials to get you started:
The rest of the materials for the course are on Sakai or linked from
there.
So that you can at least see some of the online materials for the course
while waiting for access to Sakai, go to this URL:
You'll see these Sakai files temporarily listed there:
ListList1.html -- the first list of items on the CDs that you are
supposed to listen to
Readings1.html -- the first set of readings (as applied to Exam 1)
musc101.html -- the list of the major course materials online, including a list of the quiz-assignments
syllabus.html -- the syllabus and policies for the course (calendar at
the end)
welcome.html -- the welcome message
(Please note that I may need to tweak one or more of these pages a bit
before the first
day of classes. In general, be sure to note the dates in the calendar
at the
bottom of the syllabus on that day to see whether any of them have
changed and
note them all down in your summer schedule.)
Most of the links in these files will not work, because you need to be
in Sakai; but you should be able to get enough of an idea of things to
get started. I am still tweaking the Sakai materials, so the above web
pages may be changed slightly by the time the first day of classes comes
around.
Once you get your bookstore materials and have read the above web pages,
please begin the readings. Also, the first assignment involves
listening to a piece on the Student Resource DVD (Britten's /Young
Person's Guide to the Orchestra/), so you should study that as your
first listening exercise. The first assignment is due on June 15.
