In this new blog series "Discussing Diversity," Homewatch CareGivers of Delaware Director of Operations Jim Nacchia, Jr. answers questions about diversity, equity and inclusion and how Homewatch contributes to a welcoming workplace environment for all.
What is the overall mission of Homewatch CareGivers?
Homewatch CareGivers upholds our mission, vision and values. As an integral component of the healthcare continuum, our vision is to be the premier provider of home care services worldwide. Our mission is to provide superior quality home care services which preserve dignity, independence and safety for our clients; to create a compelling employment opportunity for our employees; and to be a trusted partner within the health care continuum. Our values are our passion to support people, integrity, inspiring excellence, being genuine and acting for “we” and not “I.”
How does Homewatch incorporate values of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace?
We’ve recently identified the need and made the commitment to incorporate DE&I into our policies and culture. Every applicant is considered for a position regardless of those mentioned.
What DE&I programs or initiatives does your company have in place?
I’m on the committee called ALLIES, which stands for Aware, Listen Lead, Include, Engage and Support. We support our franchisors in these issues with support and monthly newsletters. Our franchise also offers scholarships in regard to DE&I with a whole website dedicated to it on a private server.
How do you ensure that all employees feel welcome, including new hires and interns?
I know the current training emphasizes treating each candidate who contacts us with as much enthusiasm, friendliness and interest as we do our potential clients. Also, our ALLIES group has been talking about having those difficult conversations with employees regarding their experiences. We are also a family business and do our best to make sure you feel that way, too.
Why do you think it’s important to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace environment?
My personal belief is that the more distinct voices that have a chance to speak, the better the organization. We have such a diverse clientele that it only makes sense to have a diverse workforce.
What are you looking for in UD students who want to intern or work at Homewatch?
We look for any individual that has compassion for others and is willing to listen and learn from a variety of people. Coming in with an open mind and an enthusiasm to learn will make the job more meaningful.
Are you currently hiring interns or entry-level employees?
We are always hiring for direct care workers with an opportunity to advance. Check out our Handshake page for more information.
Is there anything else UD students should know about your organization?
I am a UD grad, husband to a UD grad and father of two current UD students. So, I’m somewhat attached to my UD family!
