KINESIOLOGY

Why Major in Kinesiology?

Are you interested in the scientific aspects of human physiology, biomechanics and motor control? The Kinesiology major (formerly Exercise Science) provides students with an outstanding educational experience that prepares them for careers in the health professions or health sciences. This is primarily a pre-professional program, preparing students for subsequent clinical, graduate, or professional programs.

Uniqueness of Our Program

As part of the laboratory component of major courses in the department, students use state-of-the-art equipment for hands-on learning of course concepts. Students seeking post graduate training in clinical fields may consider volunteering in the University’s Physical Therapy Clinic located on campus and other clinics in the surrounding community. Students have access to research laboratories and facilities with advanced technology for specialized study in biomechanics, motor control, cardiovascular, skeletal, muscular and neural physiology. Students are encouraged to participate in undergraduate research through individualized independent study and senior-level honors theses. Valuable research experience is gained through involvement in funded research projects and interdisciplinary research groups.

Our Curriculum

Prerequisite courses required for admission to many clinical graduate programs are included in the Kinesiology curriculum. The major is flexible – students choose from specialized courses in the major to complement their degree program and career direction; moreover, if desired, students may pursue one or more minors across campus in fulfilling elective credit for the major.

Students take foundational courses in biology, chemistry, math, physics, psychology, and nutrition in addition to fundamental courses within the major in human anatomy & physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, sports healthcare, and research methods.
