phd in epidemiology
About the program
The PhD in Epidemiology provides students with advanced training in epidemiological methods and prepares them for careers in research, teaching, and applied public health. The program is designed to support students with some experience in public health who seek additional training related to research methods and their application to population health. Areas of focus are driven by faculty research interests and admission to the PhD program requires matching an applicant’s research interests with a faculty member.
All students receive research and/or teaching assistantships.
- MPH, MSPH, MS or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Official GRE scores in at least the 50th percentile on quantitative and verbal reasoning within the last 5 years.
- Written personal statement (2-pages maximum, single spaced) that clearly describes the applicant's research and curriculum interests in epidemiology; how a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Delaware will assist the applicant in achieving their long-term career goals; and how the applicant's research interests align with research being conducted by faculty in the department (both core and affiliated epidemiology faculty). Please include the names of specific faculty members you are interested in working with in your personal statement. You may also use the personal statement to provide additional context into your professional and academic history.
- Current resume and three letters of recommendation.
- Applicants must connect to the program prior to applying to identify a potential faculty advisor. Admission is based on available funding and identification of a willing faculty advisor who is a good fit for the student’s interests.
For International Students: The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required of all international applicants (unless your country of residency has English as an official language or you already have been issued a higher education degree earned from an institution in a country with English as an official language). Please refer to the Graduate College regarding requirements for any and all updates such as accepted test scores and accepted measures of language proficiency.
