Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Scholar Program
Be rewarded for teaching what you love
The OLLI Scholars Program at the University of Delaware provides graduate students and postdocs with a unique opportunity to share their passion and expertise while gaining valuable teaching experience for their professional advancement.
OLLI Scholars design and teach a five-week course in their area of interest, one day per week, each session lasting 75 minutes. Courses can be delivered in person, online or in a hybrid format, with a preference for in-person classes at any of the University of Delaware locations.
These scholars not only inspire and educate enthusiastic adult learners but also earn a $1,100 stipend and mentoring by experienced OLLI member educators for their contributions to the OLLI learning community.
OLLI at the University of Delaware is a vibrant community for adults aged 50 and over who are passionate about learning and connecting with others. Established in 1980, OLLI began with 200 members and 30 courses at UD’s Wilmington campus. Today, it has grown to offer more than 300 courses each semester to approximately 2,200 members across Delaware in Dover, Lewes, Newark, Ocean View, Wilmington, and online.
A rich history
University President E.A. Trabant sparked the idea for a University of Delaware OLLI in 1976, imagining an educational program for the growing number of retirees in Wilmington. This vision led to the creation of the Academy of Lifelong Learning, which has since become one of the largest and most respected Osher Lifelong Learning Institute programs in the United States.
Diverse course offerings
OLLI courses cover a wide range of subjects, including health and wellness, art and art appreciation, languages, literature, history, music, genealogy, environmental studies, current events, technology and science. These courses are taught by volunteer instructors who are passionate about their subjects and eager to share their knowledge. In addition to classes, OLLI offers various activities such as walking, hiking, bird and tree clubs, table games and travel.
