Molecular Diagnostics Certificate
This certificate is offered at the undergraduate or post-baccalaureate levels.
This program is a hybrid online and on-campus post-baccalaureate certificate program. The certificate can also be taken at the undergraduate level. The courses are designed for the mature medical laboratory scientist working in the clinical laboratory, in addition to the fields of forensics, biotechnology, and pharmaceutics. The information presented in each course will provide scientists with the opportunity to update their skills and knowledge, allowing them to meet the increasing demands of modern molecular biology theory and application.
The program comprises three courses and includes two 14-week online lectures and one weeklong on-campus laboratory practicum. Courses will include MMSC 690/490 Clinical and Molecular Cell Biology (3 credit hours),MMSC 691/491 Human Molecular Diagnostics (3 credit hours), and MMSC 692/492 Application of Molecular Diagnostics Techniques (3 credit hours). A certificate of accomplishment will be awarded to participants who successfully complete the program course work. Additionally, these courses will provide individuals seeking Molecular Biology, American Society for Clinical Pathologists (MB-ASCP) certification with a solid preparation for national credentialing examinations.
FALL
MMSC 690/490 CLINICAL & MOLECULAR CELL BIOLOGY
This online course will examine the principles of DNA, RNA and protein with regard to structure and function, including detailed review of the central dogma. Additionally, genetic topics will investigate cell development, chromosome structure and function, and gene inheritance patterns.
SPRING
MMSC 691/491 HUMAN MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS
This online course will present and discuss the molecular mechanisms causing disease and the methodology employed in the clinical laboratory for the diagnosis of disease. This will include but will not be limited to; inherited disorders, cancer, infectious disease and DNA identity testing. Prerequisite: MMSC 690/490.
SUMMER
MMSC 692/492 APPLICATION OF MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS TECHNIQUES
This hands-on practical laboratory experience will educate participants in the application of molecular techniques and will include such topics as manipulation of patient samples for the isolation of DNA, RNA or protein; detection of disease states employing PCR, RT-PCR and qPCR; and analysis and interpretation of molecular data for diagnosis of disease. This class is delivered in a hybrid format. Prerequisites: MMSC 691/491.
