The curriculum in Medical Technology originated within the College of Arts and Sciences under the advisorship of Dr. James C. Kakavas, professor of bacteriology, and first appeared in the catalogue for the academic year of 1948-49.
“The curriculum prepares students for the positions in hospital laboratories, physicians’ and surgeons’ clinics, and federal, state and municipal health laboratories. It also trains students for commercial or research laboratory work requiring a knowledge of medical technology in its broadest aspect.”
- 1948 Bulletin

In 1950, the first degrees of Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology were conferred by the University of Delaware upon Sally Thomas, Susanne Cecil Marshall, and Dorothy A. Damon (Honors).
Medical Technology was first referred to as a program in the catalogue for the 1972-73 academic year, where it appeared under the Division of Health Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.
“The preprofessional phase consists of three years on the main campus, during which students fulfill the requirements in the sciences and liberal arts. The professional or internship year, which is spent mainly in the Wilmington Medical Center, consists of six months of instruction in classrooms and laboratories, adjacent to the clinical laboratory, and six months in clinical rotation.”

In 1995, the newly created Department of Medical Technology was moved from Arts and Sciences to the College of Nursing, later College of Health Sciences.
“The Medical Technology Program at the University of Delaware is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences…. Due to the national shortage of certified medical technologists, numerous job opportunities are available with excellent starting salaries.”

In 2012, it was renamed the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and began offering a doctoral degree in Medical Sciences as well as a bachelor’s degree in Medical Diagnostics, with the Pre-Physician Assistant concentration becoming available the following year.

In 2018, it was renamed the Department of Medical & Molecular Sciences and began offering a BS in Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and an MS in Medical Sciences.
The MS in Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and the MS in Medical Laboratory Science were first offered in the 2020-2021 academic year

In 2025, UD expects to confer 3 PhD degrees, 9 MS degrees, and about 170 BS degrees to students in the Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences.
Starting in the 2025-26 academic year, the MS in Medical Sciences will be known as the MS in Medical and Molecular Sciences and the PhD in Medical Sciences will be known as the PhD in Molecular Biosciences.
