There are various reasons why a student would pursue an Independent Study, such as a shared interest of study with a professor or assisting with a research project under faculty supervision. Students should register for the Independent Study course and then submit the Independent Study/DLE webform in UDSIS. This webform contract outlines what the student and faculty member have agreed to do per the Independent Study. Using an Independent Study to substitute for a required course is rarely an option.

The University system depends upon direct communication between students and faculty.  If possible, students should notify their instructors before the missing class by following the directions provided at the beginning of the semester by the instructor.

If your instructor requires documentation for the absence, students should send documentation to their Assistant Dean’s office at chs-advise@udel.edu, who will notify all of the student’s instructors for the semester with an official documented absence notification. For documentation guidelines, please click here

Note: the role of the Assistant Dean’s Office is to collect documentation and notify the instructors. Authority for excusing and approving make-up work rests solely with the instructor of the course.

When a student’s overall GPA drops below a 2.0, they are placed in the Academic Warning Process. During this process, students are assigned an Academic Success Coach, who will assist in developing realistic, achievable goals and creating an academic success plan. Academic Advisors will also assist students who are in Academic Warning with understanding academic policies, understanding how their grades impact their graduation plan, planning future courses, reviewing their grading options, and lifting registration holds. They also help connect students with other support resources at UD.
