About the Little Masters Project

In September of 2017, the UD Little Masters Project (LMP), presented by the UD Master Players Concert Series, was launched to provide free private music lessons, music theory classes and instruments to children of low-income households in Delaware and the nearby tri-state areas. The mission of LMP is to provide music education and opportunities to students in need, removing systemic barriers to achievement. We believe that experiencing music at all levels is transformative, and essential for children of all backgrounds.

During adolescence, music makes a major contribution to the development of self-identity and is seen as a source of support when young people are feeling troubled or lonely. Music creates opportunities to meet new people, find a sense of belonging, and provides a way for youth to express and explore their emotions. The many added benefits of studying music include brain growth (studies in neuroscience show that music can enhance brain function in children), language skills, math skills, memory, attention and concentration, increased coordination, discipline, and social skills. The Little Masters Project not only embraces teaching music, but focuses on engaging the student as a whole.
