How tutoring works

The ELI is one of the only programs in the United States to offer personal one-on-one tutoring with trained tutors in its regular “full program” at no extra charge. Tutoring is not graded. Attendance is recorded when you visit a tutor.  If you are part of a special program that tracks tutoring attendance, your advisor will be able to check your attendance.

Activities

For tutoring to work well, you must be prepared. Bring questions and problems to each tutoring session, and your tutor will work hard to help you. You should bring your textbooks, TOEFL workbooks or other materials that can help you with your English. The Tutoring Center also recommends that you keep a notebook with you and write down questions about English and American culture during the week.

You and your tutor can work together on an instructional plan to improve your language skills. Activities might include:

  • Assistance with writing assignments
  • Questions about American culture and history
  • Practice with conversation skills, pronunciation, grammar, and reading and listening comprehension
  • TOEFL practice
  • Word games

About our tutors

Our tutors come from many different backgrounds. What they all have in common is a strong English ability, a commitment to helping their students, and an interest in sharing knowledge. You can find tutors who can help you with learning about American history and society, improving your business, legal, or academic English vocabulary, understanding American pop culture and cultural references. In addition, we have some tutors with special backgrounds such as chemistry, veterinary medicine, electrical engineering, linguistics, literature, art, culinary studies, anthropology, education and more.

Listening Laboratory

Available for students in levels 1 to 4, this online learning resource helps students improve their English listening skills by using games, videos, practice quizzes and other activities.

Students in the lab can practice a variety of skills, such as:

  • Understanding main ideas
  • Listening for vowel and consonant sounds
  • Understanding native speaker pronunciation and more

Look for Listening Lab lessons for your level in Canvas.
