Completion Requirements

What MUST I DO TO FINISH GRADUATE CAP AND START FULL-TIME GRADUATE STUDIES?
Students in the Graduate Conditional Admissions Program (Graduate CAP) at the University of Delaware's English Language Institute must satisfy language and pre-academic requirements before they begin a graduate (master's or doctoral) program at UD. Graduate CAP students must meet requirements in several categories, including:
- Courses and grades
- Additional requirements from the graduate department
- Effort score
- CAP Cohort
- Attendance
- Academic Honesty
All of these requirements must be met in the Graduate CAP students’ final session in order for them to begin their full-time university coursework.
Requirements by Track of Study
The specific requirements that must be met depend on which graduate program you will attend.
- Students in most graduate business programs (except finance) must meet requirements in the “Business Track.”
- Students in all other graduate programs will follow the “General Track.”
If you have questions about the requirements, contact your CAP Academic Advisor at CAPadvisor@udel.edu.
To begin full-time university studies, Business Track Graduate CAP students must complete the requirements of the Business Program, which consist of two listening/speaking and one reading/writing course (and their prerequisites, if the student is placed at a lower level upon entering the program).
Listening/Speaking
Graduate CAP Business students must complete Advanced Business Case Studies (ABCS) with grades of B or higher in both classes and have an effort grade of 1 or 2 in both classes.
Reading/Writing
In Level 6 Reading and Writing for Graduate Programs (R/W Grad 6), the student must pass the course with a grade of B or higher and have an effort score of 1 or 2.
Successfully Completing the CAP Cohort Program
In addition to completing the CAP requirements of the Business Program, Business Track Graduate CAP students in levels 5–6 also must participate actively in a special program called CAP Cohort. This class meets at least twice a week for an hour and is required for CAP students.
Besides the course and grade requirements listed above, Graduate CAP students must satisfy any other objective required by their graduate program as part of their conditional admission.
To verify whether you have other requirements for your conditional admission, check the acceptance letter that you received from your graduate program and/or contact the graduate department that gave you the conditional admission. You may also contact the CAP Admissions Team at CAPadmissions@udel.edu.
Students must also prove their readiness for university study through showing consistently strong effort in their courses. The effort score is based on attendance, punctuality, engagement, interaction and behavior. Graduate CAP students must achieve an effort score of 1 (excellent) or 2 (satisfactory) in their courses during their final session at ELI.
Graduate CAP students are required to successfully complete the CAP Cohort program before beginning their university coursework.
Students must earn a grade of B in Cohort. They must also meet the following requirements:
- Have an effort score of 1 or 2 in their Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing courses.

- In a 7-week session, Graduate CAP students cannot miss more than 14 classes.
