The University of Delaware's English Language Institute (ELI) offers a diverse array of international academic programs designed to help students achieve their language learning goals and prepare for success in American universities.

    Intensive English Program (IEP)

    A core program of the English Language Institute, the IEP offers four focus areas to improve English skills for general and professional purposes. The IEP includes a full cultural program as well as various housing options.

    Academic Transitions

    A pathway program for students who have been conditionally admitted to a bachelor’s degree program at the University of Delaware. Students can earn up to 28 university credits while improving their Academic English skills.

    Accelerate-U Delaware

    Support from the very start

    Accelerate-U Delaware helps newly enrolled international students build a strong academic, linguistic and cultural foundation during their first semester as undergraduates at the University of Delaware. Offered in fall and spring semesters, the program ensures a smooth transition to college life and prepares students for success.

    Accelerated University English Program

    This full-service, pre-academic ESL program addresses the needs of students who plan to pursue undergraduate or graduate degree studies in the United States after completing their ESL studies.

    American Culture and Communication

    This short-term program provides intercultural immersion for university students from around the world. Cultural programming, fun activities, community engagement and language instruction offer many opportunities for cross-cultural interactions.

    Corporate Tutoring

    ELI's high-quality intensive and semi-intensive Business English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction for short-term visiting international business professionals, as well as for international employees of U.S.-based corporations.

    Delaware EFL Teacher Training (DEFT)

    The Delaware EFL Teacher Training Institute (DEFT) is an intensive certificate program designed to meet the specific needs of EFL teachers, supervisors, or teacher trainers in other countries.

    English and American Culture

    Improve your English skills while learning about American culture! This four-week immersion experience for university students from around the world combines high-quality ESL instruction, cultural courses and an excursion to a major city.

    Evening Program

    This program offers semi-intensive courses in English as a Second Language. Classes are scheduled in the evenings to accommodate the busy schedules of prospective students who work during the day.

    Graduate Conditional Admissions Program (Graduate CAP)

    This program is for international students who want to pursue a graduate (master’s or doctorate) degree–but who need to improve their English skills first.

    Graduate Pathways

    This intensive, one-semester (4-month) program is designed for international students who are conditionally admitted to a participating UD graduate program and approaching the language proficiency required for matriculation.

    IELTS Preparation Course

    The IELTS Preparation course develops students’ language and test-taking skills for the IELTS examination. Open to full- and part-time ELI students or as a standalone course.

    Language Adventure USA

    This short-term adventure combines high-quality ESL instruction, cultural courses and fun! It provides an enriching experience for high school students from around the world.

    Level Up Academics Summer Program

    Improve your college readiness skills while learning about U.S. culture! This three-week program offers high-quality instruction and skill development in leadership, STEM, presentation, research and college entrance essay writing.

    University Semester USA

    Study abroad at the University of Delaware — one of America's oldest universities. International students can earn up to 10 credits taking university classes while enjoying weekend trips and events.
