Biography

Wakako Yamasaki (Pennington) joined the University of Delaware’s English Language Institute (ELI) in January 2014. Since then, she has taught English to international students across various proficiency levels, with a particular focus on advanced and intermediate classes, as well as business English courses.

Beyond the classroom, Wakako plays a role in ELI’s marketing team, where she works to establish and strengthen relationships with universities and educational agents in Japan. Her efforts support the development of global connections and foster cross-cultural collaboration. Wakako also coordinates special programs for Japanese students, tailoring educational experiences to meet their specific needs and goals.

Prior to joining ELI, Wakako worked at universities in Japan, where she gained experience teaching and conducting teacher training. She trained high school, middle school, and elementary school teachers in basic second language acquisition theory, the English phonetic system, and effective teaching methods.

Wakako holds a B.A. in law and an M.S. in TESOL. Her research interests focus on the application of critical thinking theory to ESL/EFL instruction and fostering an inclusive community for international students on U.S. campuses. She has shared her expertise through publications and presentations in both the United States and Japan.
