Biography
Tammy L. Anderson, Ph.D. is a Professor in the University of Delaware’s Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. She has published numerous books, including Understanding Deviance: Connecting Classical and Contemporary Perspectives (Routledge), Rave Culture: The Alteration and Decline of a Philadelphia Music Scene (Temple University Press), Sex, Drugs, and Death (Routledge), and Neither Villain nor Victim: Empowerment and Agency among Women Substance Abusers (Rutgers University Press), 50+ peer-reviewed articles, and 20+ other published papers, which showcase her expertise in substance abuse, the opioid epidemic, deviance, crime, culture, gender and social control. Professor Anderson’s research has received more than $2 million in support from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Drug Abuse, National Institute of Justice, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Association of State Controlled Substance Authorities, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Centers for Disease Control and the University of Delaware. Anderson is the founder of the HeNN (Help Near & Now) smartphone app, which is a GIS-based locator of services and events for substance abuse prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery in the Mid-Atlantic region. Along with Asia Friedman and Ann Bell, she serves as Editor-in-Chief of Sociological Forum, the flagship journal of the Eastern Sociological Society. Anderson’s service extends to the local community as she serves on Delaware’s Prescription Drug Opioid Distribution Commission and chairs its committee on Public Outreach and Community Engagement.
