Biography

Andrea Beltrama, Ph.D., is a temporary assistant professor with the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at the University of Delaware. He has received his Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Chicago.

Beltrama's work focuses on how people exchange meaning when using language. He's especially interested in understanding how specific words affect the meaning of sentences and utterances; how interlocutors exchange different types of information; and the relationship between meaning interpretation and other activities central to human communication — such as building common ground, negotiating social identity and expressing agreement or disagreement. His research is situated at the intersection of semantics/pragmatics, sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics.
