Who is eligible?

The certificate is open to all undergraduate students at the University of Delaware.

Required Courses

20 credit hours — A minimum grade of C- must be earned in each course.

Students enrolled in the program gain valuable language skills through required coursework, while a study abroad experience in Leipzig, Germany, provides immersive, real-world exposure to German engineering and business culture. This hands-on learning experience ensures that students graduate with a deep understanding of both the technical and communicative aspects of working in an international setting.

German language for engineers (8 credits)

Students will engage with content from multiple disciplines — STEM, the arts and the humanities — while building transferrable, real-world skills including collaboration, problem solving, time management and global awareness. They will build linguistic and intercultural competence with respect to the German-speaking world.

Course Details: 4 credit hours. Typically offered in spring semester and summer session (online).

Designed specifically for engineering students, this course takes an interdisciplinary, progressive approach to learning German, with meaningful, content-based tasks designed to promote communication and critical thinking. Students will engage with content from multiple disciplines — STEM, the arts and the humanities — while building transferrable, real-world skills including collaboration, problem solving, time management, global awareness and cultural competency.  

Course Details: 4 credit hours. Pre-requisite: GRMN 103. Typically offered in fall semester.

German culture and conversation courses in Leipzig, Germany, Study Abroad (6 credits)

Discussion of topics drawn from contemporary German life. Designed to broaden knowledge of German culture while impr ving oral and aural language skills.

Course Details: 3 credit hours. Taught abroad only. Pre-requisite: GRMN 104 or GRMN 107. Typically offered in winter session.

Basic specialist vocabulary for STEM subjects, strategies for developing vocabulary and the associated important linguistic structures. At the end of the course, the participants should be able to adequately exchange ideas in German on issues related to their subject areas. Enhancing intercultural competency and adaptability in multicultural settings.

Course Details: 3 credit hours. Taught abroad only in English and German. Pre-requisite: GRMN 104. Typically offered in winter session.
