Associate in Arts (AAP) Students Interested in Majoring in History Education

Want to teach Social Studies in Middle or High School? AAP students can complete a History Education BA in four years (two in the AA Program and two on the Newark Campus) by following these guidelines in your first two years:

  • Complete general University and College course requirements (i.e. MATH 113, ENGL 110 and foreign language courses offered)

  • Follow the History Education Checksheet and take A&S General Education and related coursework courses. Try to choose Related Coursework courses that also satisfy the A&S General Education requirements when possible. See our Social Studies/Gen Ed Coursework Matrix for courses that satisfy both requirements.

  • Save all coursework and syllabi for your Inquiry and Analysis Portfolio—to be completed in February of your junior year.

  • Maintain minimum GPA requirements for student teaching admission (2.75 cumulative; 3.0 major)

Spring Semester of Sophomore year, register for the following courses. These courses will need to be taken in the fall semester of Junior Year on the Newark Campus.

  • HIST 268

  • HIST 315

  • HIST 316* (includes a practicum)

  • EDUC 419* (includes a practicum)

  • EDUC 414

Note a PPD test and a Criminal Background check must be completed BEFORE HIST 316,  EDUC 419, EDUC 413 and HIST 491 can be taken.

Email Dr. Barry Joyce bjoyce@udel.edu to set up an advising appointment before the Fall Semester of Junior year begins.
