The Visiting Student Program is a cooperative arrangement between the University of Delaware (UD) and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) that provides an opportunity for students to attend FIT for one year without the necessity to transfer. Courses taken at FIT are applied toward the Bachelor of Science degree in Fashion Merchandising and Management or Fashion Design and Product Innovation at the University of Delaware. Students who successfully complete the prescribed courses at both institutions qualify for an Associate degree from FIT and a Bachelor degree from UD. The fashion programs at the University of Delaware and the FIT visiting student program complement each other.

The application process begins in the fall of the student's sophomore year with the FIT application due on December 31. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or above to apply and have met with the UD FIT liaison before applying.

The following three FIT associate degree programs are offered to students majoring in fashion merchandising and apparel design:

These FIT options give students an opportunity to broaden their educational background and to gain additional knowledge about the fashion industry in one of t he world's largest fashion centers. While attending FIT, students have direct exposure to prominent designers and retailers in the realm of fashion. The year in New York also provides students with diverse cultural experiences.

Early advisement and planning for the FIT Visiting Student program are required. Students must inform their Fashion and Apparel Studies academic advisors of their intent to participate in the FIT Visiting Student program.

Students can choose from three degree programs: Fashion Design, Fashion Business Management or Textile Development and Marketing.

Upon completion of the FIT Visiting Student Program and the curricula of one program in the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies (FASH), the student will receive an Associate Degree from FIT and a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Delaware.

Full-time Fashion Merchandising and Management Majors or Fashion Design and Product Innovation majors with 60 credits (at the time they enter FIT) are eligible to apply. In addition, a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 is required at the time of application. Other application guidelines/requirements will be explained by FIT at the time of application.

Students must submit a Visiting Student Response form to the UD Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies liaison for the FIT program. Once students have been approved to apply, students then submit applications to FIT through the SUNY application process. FIT makes the final decision regarding who is admitted into their programs.

The program at FIT is one year in length and assumes successful completion of all of the required FIT courses. Neither degree will be conferred until the student completes their bachelor degree requirements from the University of Delaware.

Students should contact their assigned academic advisor in the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies for additional information and advice. FASH advisors are knowledgeable of the guidelines and will assist their advisees with planning. Once the student is identified as a potential applicant for the FIT Program, the UD/FIT faculty liaison will schedule a meeting with the student to discuss the application process.
