Change of Major
Changing From another majoR
UD students who wish to transfer from another major in the University are advised to contact the department office regarding application policies and procedures.
Into Fashion Design and Product Innovation
Current students interested in transferring into the fashion design and product innovation major should follow these steps:
- Speak with an advisor in the Fashion and Apparel Studies Department. Email fashion-studies@udel.edu to set up an appointment.
- Complete FASH122. Students must earn a grade of C- or higher to be considered for transfer.
- Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or above.
- After completion of FASH122 (offered in both spring and fall semesters) and all grades for the semester have posted, submit a change of major webform through UDSIS.
Important information to note
- It is critical that you work closely with your faculty advisor and regularly monitor your academic progress by reviewing your audit in UDSIS. This will insure proper progress toward graduation.
- Many courses in the fashion design and product innovation major are sequential and must be taken one before another. In other words, it is not possible to take sequential classes at the same time. For example, 122, 221, 314, 324, and 484 must all be taken in sequence and in separate semesters.
- Additional prerequisites are listed in the catalog. Be sure to keep in touch with the best advice by attending advisement meetings and working with your advisor in the planning of your schedule.
- Careful planning and meeting all prerequisites in a timely way is critical. Some students may need to stay an additional semester to meet all requirements if courses are not taken at the correct time in their program.
- As an internal transfer student, you may not be able to complete the program in a total of four years. Some transfer students who enter the program after the sophomore year may need to stay beyond four years. Again, careful planning with your advisor is critical.
Into Fashion Merchandising and Management
When can I apply as an internal transfer?
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Students must complete MATH114 (or higher) and receive a minimum of C- before applying. Submit a change of major webform to be considered for transfer.
How will my application be evaluated?
Fashion merchandising and management is a restricted major, which means that the number of spaces available for internal transfers will vary by semester and we may not be able to offer admission to internal transfers during some semesters. A faculty committee will review your application based on academic merit including the following criteria:
- Minimum 2.0 GPA
- Grade in MATH 114 OR 115, 221, 241 (must be completed prior to applying for transfer)
- Seniority (e.g., juniors will have priority over sophomores, etc.)
What else do I need to know about transferring into fashion merchandising and management?
Be sure you refer to the most recent undergraduate catalog for a summary of course requirements and offerings. You are required to complete all requirements for the major, and some courses are not offered each semester. Therefore, graduation from the university within four years may not be possible for internal transfers. Before applying, you should determine whether you will be able to graduate within an acceptable timeframe. It will be very important to meet with your advisor to review your academic progress and to stay on track for graduation.
