Professional Development, Grants and Employment Opportunities

Graduate Student Professional Development

The Department has funds to help graduate students offset the cost of professional development to national or international meetings at which they are presenting their work as either a platform talk or a poster.

  • Awards of up to $500 are available

  • Students must be presenting work at the meeting to qualify for a Graduate Student Professional Development award

  • Students are eligible to receive a Graduate Student Professional Development award once per academic year

Students should submit a request to the Graduate Program Director at least six weeks prior to the meeting to the Graduate Program Director. The request form should be completed in its entirety and signed by both the student and the Graduate Program Director.  The request must be accompanied by the conference abstract and letter of acceptance from the conference.

University Awards

Professional Development Award

The Professional Development Award of up to $500* also is available through the Office of Graduate Studies. The deadline for application for a travel award is one month prior to the time of travel.

*The University Travel Award requires matching funds from some other source, and this requirement is satisfied by the Department's Travel Award.

Support for Collection-Based Research

Support for Collection-Based Research is available from the Office of Graduate and Professional Education and the Center for Material Culture Studies. Graduate students must travel to historic sites and museums to study collections and to utilize library and archival holdings for dissertation and thesis research and data collection in material culture studies and other disciplines. This matching competitive grant program will provide funding of up to $300 to graduate students at the doctoral and master's level to support short-term collection-based research travel. A student may apply for funding only once each fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
