Vivien Barnett (4+1 B.A./M.A. in Art History, 2020)

Job Title: Maryland Center for History and Culture, Baltimore

Months after completing the Art History for Museum Professionals 4+1 (B.A./M.A.) program, I began working at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) as a curatorial assistant. Because of the small size of the museum, my position entails a much wider variety of duties than pure exhibition planning. I first came to MCHC as an intern in 2019, where I researched and rehoused garments from its comprehensive historic fashion collection, known as the Fashion Archives. In my current position, I continue to work closely with the Fashion Archives as well as many other projects, including collections care, exhibition development and installation, research, writing blog posts, digitizing our collections and much more. I am also given the freedom to design my own independent collections-focused projects to aid in both the development of my career and in increasing awareness of and access to the MCHC collection. While my B.A./M.A. from the University of Delaware certainly made me a promising candidate for this position, I also acknowledge that my previous experience at this organization and others, as well as the mentorship of some of the wonderful professors in the Department of Art History and Department of Art Conservation, left me very well prepared for a career in museums. I aim to continue along this path of making art and history accessible to everyone by working directly with collections and sharing my work with others in the field.
