Unlock Your Artistic Potential Through Global Exploration

The Department of Art and Design at the University of Delaware is renowned for its exceptional study abroad programs, offering students an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse cultural landscapes and expand their creative horizons. By venturing beyond the confines of the classroom, aspiring artists and designers embark on a transformative journey that fosters personal growth, cross-cultural understanding, and a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of global artistic expression. This invaluable experience not only broadens perspectives but also ignites a lifelong passion for exploration, equipping students with the skills and inspiration to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Experience culture, create art, and exhibit your work in Berlin. Beginning with two weeks in Vienna students will experience art from, among others, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, works from the Secessionist movement, as well as stunning architecture. The next two weeks will be spent in Berlin, home to a stimulating international artistic community, and currently considered one of the most important contemporary art scenes in the world. Vienna and Berlin are cities rich in cultural history and thriving contemporary art scenes and both provide great opportunities for the young artist and/or intellectually curious.

This is an interrogative travel experience with different approaches to drawing and recording the observed environment (as it relates to cultural and self perception) explored, as well as the production of a report in the form of a journal, artist's book, blog or website; this work will be assembled by the student for exhibition at a gallery space in Berlin.

London is currently one of the most creative and celebrated advertising and graphic design communities on the planet. AdWeek, a major advertising publication, listed the ten most creative advertising agencies in the world, three of which are headquartered in the city of London (three were also from the whole of the United States). Participants will have an excellent opportunity to broaden their own visual creative experiences and their understanding of an increasingly more visually-oriented global culture. We will focus on people and places related to advertising, mass communication and related industries, such as graphic design, applied photography, new media, illustration, and publication.

Students will be involved in two investigatory and interactive for-credit experiences.

The first is the visiting of a variety of commercial visual design groups in London which may include design-related museums, advertising agencies, design studios, new media/interactive design studios, illustrators, photographers, commercial directors and magazines.

The second is an independent research effort (i.e., advertising campaigns, editorial design, typography and posters) and the production of a report in the form of a journal, artist's book or web site. The second topic must be approved before leaving on the trip.

As the world shrinks, more mass communication is presented through the use of visual elements to avoid the inherent problems of working across differing languages, the need to cut through the visual clutter to get your message noticed and to counter the ever-increasing lack of time. The trip to England offers an excellent opportunity for just such a case study and at a highly creative level.

Spend winter session learning documentary photography in Tanzania, an African nation rich in indigenous cultures and spectacular wildlife.

On a 26-day guided safari, you'll experience Tanzanian culture through an examination of their ancient and contemporary art. Through your lens you'll capture the splendor of African animals in their natural environment and understand the ethics and principals of photographing local people. Students will learn firsthand about the real, practical challenges involved in the survival of various ethnic groups and how individuals are creating works of art as a sustainable source of income.

You will travel to Tanzania with Jon Cox, a professional photographer and veteran of twenty UD study abroad programs on six continents. Prof. Cox is also a board member of the Dorobo Fund, a non-profit organization fighting for the rights of indigenous peoples of Tanzania.

Once in Tanzania, your safari will take you to the national parks and reserves of Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire National Parks for documentary photography amid the savanna. The parks contain spectacular concentrations of wildlife that are habituated to vehicles, allowing close observation of various aspects of animal behavior including foraging, social interactions within species, and multiple-species interactions. While on tribal lands the indigenous people will be your guides taking you to culturally significant areas like hidden caves of Maasai warriors, Singing Rocks of the Hadzabe Hunter/Gatherers and waterfalls of the Iraq people. Daily field excursions will be supplemented with nightly campfire discussion about local art, culture, photography and conservation issues.
