With your help, we can turn $10,000 into $20,000 to support future ELI students!

April 25, 2025 Written by Kaitlyn Diehl

For 45 years, ELI has welcomed students from around the world to humble yet dynamic Newark, Delaware. Many of those students are able to pay the high cost of studying in the U.S., and others were fortunate to be sponsored by governments, non-governmental agencies, or foundations. We know studying the English language through an immersive experience changes lives; we have thousands of personal examples, from local immigrants and refugees to future leaders. We also know that studying English in this engaging and supportive environment can be just outside the reach of many students due to external factors such as cost-of-living differences or unfavorable exchange rates. We’re committed to finding a way to support students and help them meet their academic goals, and in exchange, they enrich our community by serving as ambassadors of their homes and families.

How will the matching donation work?

In 2024, the Dr. Scott Stevens Student Support Fund was established to provide tuition or other academic programming assistance to students for a variety of reasons. Thanks to a very generous donor, ELI has the opportunity to grow this fund to $20,000, if we are able to match the donation. These matching challenges are simple, and work like this:  If someone donates $100, then our donor matches $100 for a total of $200. This works for a $25 donation ($50 total) or a $500 donation ($1000 total). This is a great way for individual contributions to have a significant impact.

How will my donation help?

The Scott Stevens ELI Student Support Fund honors Dr. Stevens’ decades of service and continues his vision of welcoming students from around the world into the UD campus through the ELI.

Your gift will provide financial support to be used for educational costs for ELI programs as well as student life events. When students complete their programs in ELI, it is the experiences that students remember with a sense of accomplishment and belonging. They blend roles as both learners of English on an American campus and ambassadors from their own lands. They practice soft diplomacy as they learn to navigate cross-cultural differences in this beautiful space on the UD campus. We invite you to play a pivotal role in the linguistic and professional success of our students.
