The college has considerable expertise in genetics, genomics, and molecular biology, and several our faculty are internationally recognized experts in this domain. The future of agriculture and natural resources depends on continued research investment in this field as solutions to many of the world’s grand challenges will involve genetics and allied disciplines.

A magnet for life science research and development, the institute supports multidisciplinary, collaborative academic research partnering with many local organizations.

Sequencing and Genotyping Center

The SGC provides assistance with experimental design, user training,
sample and data analysis. Instrumentation housed in the SGC supports
high-throughput, single-molecule, and Sanger sequencing technologies, as
well as qualitative and quantitative analysis of nucleic acids.

Dr. Harsh Bais and Charter School of Wilmington Connor Sweeney work together in the plant growth chamber in DBI. High School student Sweeney will be going to MIT with a double major in the Fall.

Plant and Soil Sciences

Our plant science program involves course work in plant molecular biology, plant breeding, plant pathology, plant tissue culture, horticulture, crop science, plant anatomy and/or plant physiology. Soil science thesis research includes soil chemistry, soil fertility and management, soil physics, soil microbiology and biochemistry, soil and water quality and environmental microbiology.
