With increased concern for the safety of all poultry on Delmarva, the Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA) announced today the cancellation of all poultry-related sessions at Delaware Ag Week.

The cancellation affects the following sessions.

  • Monday, Jan. 13: Afternoon and Evening Poultry Sessions
  • Wednesday, Jan. 15: Small Flock Poultry Session

Letter from the Dean

Brian Farkas, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, shared the following message with poultry growers and industry professionals.

After careful consultation with industry, the Delaware Department of Agriculture and the Delmarva Chicken Association we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Commercial and Small Flock Sessions at Delaware Ag Week. Out of an abundance of caution, this decision comes considering the current situation affecting poultry growers, attendees’ health and safety, their operations, and the poultry industry.

We want to emphasize that biosecurity measures are proven effective in safeguarding poultry health. Growers are encouraged to maintain and uphold the highest levels of biosecurity to protect their flocks during this time. Vigilance in maintaining the “Line of Separation” with dedicated footwear, proper composting of mortalities, sanitation, and flock management is critical to minimizing risks and ensuring the ongoing success of your operations.

We understand the disappointment this may bring, but we believe this step is necessary to prevent any potential risks to your flocks or livelihoods. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and explore opportunities for future events or virtual alternatives to support the poultry community.

If you need continuing education credits for Nutrient Management Certification, please contact Sydney Riggi, University of Delaware Nutrient Management Extension Agent, at 302-730-4000 or sydney@udel.edu.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing dedication to keeping our poultry safe. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Georgie Cartanza, University of Delaware Poultry Extension Agent, at 302-632-3173 or cartanza@udel.edu.

Sincerely,

Brian E. Farkas, Ph.D.
