Bio:

Kendra has worked with Delaware youth for more than twenty years in a variety of capacities,  including substitute teacher, para-professional, teacher of agriculture and special  education teacher, and an after-school program coordinator with various organizations including 4H. The one thing that remained the same among all of the positions, was that she was there to help guide youth on their educational journey.

Over the years, Kendra has learned what makes great educators! Educators must have a vibrant personality towards children, as well as a teaching style that makes children  eager to learn. The most effective educators make lessons fun and engaging and can address a variety of skills and abilities.

Kendra says that youth are more engaged when educators give them ownership over their learning. The best educators also set high expectations for their students, which gives them the confidence to know they will succeed. With her background being a 4H member and her varying professional experiences in education she is able to see the path of a child’s education through many different lenses, and realize that there are many aspects that affect the child’s learning and development including the positive effects that experiential learning has on youth. These activities promote the well-being of the whole child, some include service learning, art, music, cultural and character education, drug/violence/bullying prevention programs and health and nutrition.

While working in the area of 4-H afterschool programs, Kendra was able to focus on promoting positive change within the family unit, where the afterschool program supported the working parent by easing their worries about school work, help with communicating with teachers, grades, special education support and other academic related topics, as well as bring the experiential learning component of 4H to the programs.

Kendra has been very fortunate to have the professional experiences in education and she looks forward to bringing those experiences to the 4H  afterschool youth in Sussex County.
