Wilgen student awards

The Julie Mapes Wilgen Award is an annual award to honor Dr. Julie Mapes Wilgen’s lifelong work and dedication to the field of sexuality education and family studies by providing a student with a $1,000 stipend.

The award is given to an outstanding University of Delaware undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated a commitment to the field of human sexuality and/or gender studies and who has shown an appreciation for diversity and for the betterment of society.

Applicant criteria:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student in any major

  • Has attended UD for at least one year

  • Minimum GPA of 3.4 as evidenced by a transcript

  • Demonstrated commitment to study or engage in the field of human sexuality and gender studies

  • Demonstrated appreciation for diversity and the betterment of society

 

Application packet requirements:

  • Student’s contact information

  • Current resume

  • Transcript

  • Two letters of recommendation

  • Two-page essay by student addressing this demonstration of commitment and appreciation described above

The Michael C. Wilgen annual award honors the life of Lt. Col. Michael C. Wilgen for his dedication to his country and to his fellow military veterans. Michael served twenty-five years of active-duty military service (1968-1993), followed by working as a Region III Commander of Military Order of World Wars (MOWW).

This award is given to support a student veteran who will collaborate with the Biden Institute to improve the lives of veterans on UD’s campus.

Applicants will be required to submit project proposals that will benefit student veterans. The veteran selected to receive this award should demonstrate the qualities of leadership, scholarship, and integrity as they contribute to the University of Delaware, their community and our country.

Recipients are provided with an award of $1,000.

Applicant criteria:

  • Must be a United States military veteran
  • Undergraduate or graduate student in any major
  • Has attended UD for at least 1 year
  • Minimum GPA of 3.4 as evident by transcript
  • Demonstrated appreciation for diversity and the betterment of society

  • A brief project proposal (250-500 words) that will benefit student veterans on UD’s campus
