Undergraduate and graduate-level courses offered, including career workshop and convenient delivery formats

The Biden School offers a variety of courses for Winter Session 2025 that satisfy both undergraduate and graduate-level degree requirements. Multiple online and asynchronous options offer a flexible way for students to get caught up or ahead on credits. These courses

build practical, marketable knowledge and skills in leadership, public policy, energy and environmental policy, regardless of college or major.

Undergraduate-level:

LEAD100 Leadership, Integrity and Change

LEAD100 introduces students to leadership challenges and includes an experiential practice-based change project, providing hands-on experience in applying the skills and practices of effective leadership to create positive change.

3 credits

LEAD/UAPP150 Advocacy and Social Change

LEAD/UAPP150 introduces students to the people and organizations making social change in the United States, including activists, social movements and nonprofit organizations. Students will learn about identifying and defining a social cause in which they believe and would like to influence, the people and organizations involved, the ways to advocate for change and the career paths open to social activists in the nonprofit sector.

LEAD200 The Leadership Challenge

LEAD200 introduces students to the challenge of leadership in an increasingly complex, global and fast-paced world. The course provides theoretical bases of leadership while encouraging students to develop their own leadership potential.

LEAD300 Leadership, Creativity and Innovation

LEAD300 provides students with the theoretical bases of leadership, creativity, and innovation that inform the effective practice of leadership.

3 credits

UAPP211 Introduction to Public Health

UAPP211 provides an overview of public health, addressing the history, epidemiological principles, social and behavioral factors, and environmental, political and medical-care issues concerning public health practice. Students will embark on an exploration of the practicality of public health as portrayed through current events, guest speakers and case studies.

UAPP301 Topics in Public Policy: Civility, Unity and Public Life

This offering of UAPP301 equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for fostering civility and unity in today's polarized society. It will cover key topics such as the principles of engaged citizenship, the importance of respectful dialogue, and strategies for bridging divides. Through interactive sessions, participants will develop practical approaches to leading and engaging in constructive dialogue across differences.

Graduate-level:

SPPA621 Health Systems, Policy and Economics

SPPA621 introduces basic concepts in microeconomic theory and analysis applied to health policy and the care delivery system in the United States. Students in the course will address supply and demand issues for health services, payment systems and health insurance, and key public and private actors in the health sector.

UAPP689 Innovation and Technology in Public and Nonprofit Organizations

UAPP689 considers the role of technology in the planning and administration of public and nonprofit organizations. Topics include technology planning and budgeting, data processing and analysis, databases, change strategy and policy issues with current and emerging technology tools for planning and management.

Open to both undergraduate and graduate students:

SPPA400/600 Public Service Career Workshop

SPPA400/600 gives students pursuing a degree in public policy and administration or who are interested in nonprofit, government, and/or public service the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare for their future career advancement. This includes professional writing, finding and applying to jobs, interview and networking skills and a look into potential career paths. Students will also learn from and network with individuals with similar backgrounds in various professions.
