Job Title: Administrative Officer, National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Dr. Mark D. Stevens (MPA '09) is a Lead Management Analyst in the Office of Management at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He joined the office after a brief stint as an Administrative Office at the National Center for Advancing Translational sciences, providing services in budget, human resources, procurement, space, and facilities. As a Lead MAnagement Analyst, he is the financial coordinator of a $1 billion budget and provides high-level advice and guidance to the NIH Deputy Director and Assistant Director of Management on administrative matters of policy, procedures, and internal controls to improve management operations. These experiences led Stevens to successfully pursue and earn a Doctorate of Public Administration (DPA) from the University of Baltimore in the hopes of advancing efficient and effective NIH administrative management.

While studying for his MPA at the Biden School, Stevens worked as a research assistant and supported the work of Dr. Flynn and Professor Dworsky on issues related to Delaware's education and transportation issues. He also was a Legislative Fellow through the Institute for Public Administration, and assisted the Delaware House Banking and Insurance and Housing and Community Affairs committees. Stevens believes that these experiences fully prepared him for the rigors of a career in federal administrative management.

In his spare time, Stevens teaches at American University as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Affairs. He often presents on the topics of public service, leadership, and career coaching for young adults and millennials. He most enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

Stevens resides in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
