Transfer Students
Welcome, Blue Hens!
We are excited to welcome you to UD! While incoming transfer students (who are not admitted as freshmen) are not guaranteed on-campus housing, we do our best to offer space to transfer students when possible. You can learn more below about housing opportunities for transfer students in the fall and spring, if you are interested in living on campus.
If you would like to live off campus, please check out the Living Off Campus guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Incoming transfer students are considered a freshman transfer if they are admitted with 18 or fewer credits from another institution, and graduated from high school within the last year, or are under the age of 18 at the time of admission. Freshman transfers are classified differently than traditional transfer students and are required to live on campus in the academic year of admittance. They should follow the housing guidelines for First-Year Students.
Incoming transfer students who are not admitted as a freshman are not automatically guaranteed on-campus housing. Our ability to offer housing to transfer students will depend on space availability. To be considered for a space on campus, interested students must complete an application on the My Housing portal, once it becomes available for the desired term. Applicants will be notified via email if we are able to offer them a space on campus.
For fall admits, information about a transfer student housing application for the academic year typically becomes available in late spring/early summer.
For spring admits, the spring housing application typically opens in early November with a priority deadline of mid-December.
Details about each application process will be posted to our Application Guide page once available.
Transfer students (who are not admitted as a freshman) can live in a variety of buildings and types of spaces on campus, and specific placements can vary from year to year. Transfer students are typically housed in double and triple rooms in traditional and suite-style housing.
We cannot guarantee placement in a specific location or room type. Where a student ends up living will depend on what housing options are available at the time that they are assigned to a space. To learn more about our buildings and amenities, Explore Our Halls online.
When you apply for housing, you are applying for a space on campus in general. Students cannot apply to live in a specific location or room type, and we can't guarantee placement in a specific location. We recommend that students who only want to live in an apartment look off campus since there are limited apartment-style spaces available on campus.
Check out the University's website for transfer students to learn more about the Transfer Student Association and to access other helpful resources. For off-campus living resources, visit the University's Living Off Campus website.
