Portrait of John DePol by Barnard Taylor, Owner of Press of Appletree Alley, 1982 (Oil on Canvas)

"John DePol has been an artist for more than seventy years. He is considered to be one of the great exemplars in the field of wood engraving, having produced thousands of images for commercial graphic design as well as for private presses and fine printers. His engravings belong with the best of the five hundred-year-old craft of wood engraving. His work shows both his technial facility and his artistic inspiration. His skill is apparent in both his commercial work and his artistic prints."

This site derives from an exhibit in Special Collections at the University of Delaware Library from 17 November to 17 December 2010. The objects in the exhibit reveal DePol's thinking, his craft, and his art.

This exhibit was organized and presented by MCST402 Fall Semester 2010: Debby Andrews, David Bagosy, Mackenzie Berry, Mary Hanes, Ashley Hlebinsky, Paulina Leone, Anne Sokolow, Laura Speers, with the generous assistance of Maureen Cech and Jaime Margalotti, staff members of Special Collections. The current website was designed by Timothy Petrie.
