Recycled
Coats: "Mom's Version" and "Emily Style"
Designing and constructing
complementary mother/daughter coats provided a creative outlet for my environmental
awareness, a chance to combine my research and creative endeavors, and
an alternative recycling method for an old coat. Contemporary coat
silhouettes, styling and colors were examined for design inspiration.
Because of moth holes throughout the body of the old coat, a pieced design
was my ultimate solution allowing the greatest utilization of undamaged
fabric.
Both coats are double-breasted
with raglan sleeves and a flared silhouette. Pieced borders including
solid bands and a Seminole patchwork variation provide accents at center
front, hem, sleeve cuffs and the attached scarves.
