Current Research Interests:

Animals, biotechnology, and science

Rivers Singleton, Jr.

My general research/academic interests are in the various ways that science, especially biology, and society interact with each other. Thus, I am concerned with questions about:

1) the nature and limits of scientific knowledge;

2) the impact of science on society and culture and conversely how society and culture influence science;

3) the ways that scientific disciplines evolve;

4) ethical issues created by the practice of science.

My interest in research use of animals began as part of my 1988-89 sabbatical year working as a Congressional Science Fellow with Rep. George Brown. As a result of that year, I wrote two major articles outlining the historical, philosophical, legislative, and regulatory dimensions of laboratory animal use. My interested was fostered by work as a panel member on several study groups at the Hastings Center for Bioethics. One project was an intensive examination of the ethical dimensions involved in the work of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees and resulted in the publication of the Hastings' Center Report (May/June, 1990) Special Supplement entitled: "The Ethics of Animal Experimentation and Research." The second project involved a study of the ethical dimensions of biotechnology. I was a co-editor of the final report from that study and author of a major section. A major focus of that essay was on ethical issues related to using transgenic animals.
