ARTH232 – Art of Latin American
First
Take-Home Exam
Due
Date: March 17, 2008
In both pre-Columbian and colonial Latin
America, art and architecture were used as instruments/expressions of military
and political conquest. Discuss three examples, two (2) pre-Columbian and
one (1) colonial from either Mesoamerica or the Andes, that illustrate this
relationship between art and conquest.
Format: Your answer should be structured
as an essay, with a central argument and supporting evidence, and a maximum
extension of 4 pages (double spaced, 11-point font, and margins of 1Ó). Graders
will NOT read additional pages. All of your examples should be taken from the
lists of study images given in class. Remember to state author (if applicable),
title, date and location (if applicable) for each example you use, and to bring
ideas and specific references from your assigned readings or other textbooks to
support your answers. Make sure the monuments/pieces you choose really
illustrate the issue stated in the question.
Bibliography: Support your argument
with ideas and specific references from your assigned readings or textbooks.
You may add those references at the end of your exam in the form of endnotes
following the Chicago Manual of Style. In all cases, add a
list of bibliographic references at the end of your exam. Pages containing
endnotes and/or bibliography do not count towards the 4-page limit stated
above.

submitted in printed form by Monday March 17, 2008, at 7:00 pm at the latest.
Email submissions will only be accepted from students who present a doctorÕs note
explaining a physical inability to attend class.
