ARTH232 – Art of Latin American

Third Take-Home Exam

Due Date: May 21, 2008

 

 

Focusing on the three works listed below, discuss how different 20th-century Latin American artists expressed their understandings of the surrounding world and interacted with their own realities. Discuss each example in relation to its historical and cultural context, and explain the European and/or Latin American artistic trends that informed those particular works.

á      Diego Rivera, Man, Controller of the Universe, 1934, fresco at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City (Ades: 150)

á      Carlos Cruz Diez, Paintings in the turbine inspection area of the new hydroelectric complex at Guri, 1987 (Ades: 280)

 

 

Format: Your answer should be structured as an essay, with a central argument and supporting evidence, and a maximum extension of 4 pages (double spaced, 11-point font, and margins of 1Ó). Graders will NOT read additional pages. Remember to state author, title, date and location (if applicable) for each example you use, and to bring ideas and specific references from your assigned readings or other textbooks to support your answers.

 

Bibliography: Support your argument with ideas and specific references from your assigned readings.  Give a bibliographic reference for each idea that is not your own. You may add those references at the end of your exam in the form of endnotes following the Chicago Manual of Style. In all cases, add a list of bibliographic references at the end of your exam. Pages containing endnotes and/or bibliography do not count towards the 4-page limit stated above.  

 

Delivery and submission: Your answer must be submitted in printed form by Wednesday May 21, 2008, at 7:00 pm at the latest. Email submissions will only be accepted from students who present a doctorÕs note explaining a physical inability to attend class.
