Guidelines to the Final Exam

 

 

The final exam will take place on Monday May 23, 1:00-3:00 pm, in our classroom (WHL006). The exam will cover the material discussed in class from March 22 to May 17 (i.e., from “Mannerism in Ducal Florence” to “Art in the Age of Discovery” (that is, from the mid-term on). The exam will consist of:

 

·        A slide identification section: you will be shown 5 images that we have discussed in class. You must state exact author, title, and date, and give a short explanation on the particular stylistic/technical features of this piece (10 marks for each image: 2 for each identification item; 4 for the explanation). Each image will be shown for 6 min.

 

(50 marks in total; 30 min. for this section)

 

 

·        One essay question: You will be given one question from the following list, mainly based on the thematic lectures given from April 19 to May 12. Please, use an essay format to answer the question (always write full sentences -- point form answers are not allowed in this portion of the exam). Remember to place the specific issues and examples you are discussing within their historical and ideological context.

 

a)      Explain the meaning of the terms High Renaissance and Mannerism. Compare the two styles providing at least three examples from each period.

b)      Discuss the impact of the new reformatory ideas in the artistic production of the 16th century. Discuss at least 3 artistic examples that exhibit contemporary concerns about the role of religious images.

c)      Citing at least four appropriate examples, explain the meaning of the phrase Ut pictura poesis, and its impact in the artistic production of the 16th century.

d)      Explain the new ideas about artistic genius that emerged during the 16th century. Discuss at least four examples where artists made use of some of those ideas in order to demonstrate their particular talent and skills.

e)      During the 16th century collecting became an important activity among European rulers. Discuss the collecting practices of at least three European rulers and their impact in 16th-century Italian art.

Review sessions: Scott Mangieri will hold two review sessions in preparation for the final exam:  Tuesday May 17, 7-8 pm; and Wednesday May 18, 9-10 am, both of them in Old College 202. Make sure to come prepared with questions.
