Homemade magnet stand for paramagnetic beads

You can buy magnet stands for separating paramagnetic beads (Promega sells a 12-tube stand for $108, for example), or if you're cheap like me you can build some. Scientifics Online sells samarium cobalt magnets, 1/4 inch diameter, for about $9 for a package of two (stock number CR30352-75). With eight magnets, a microcentrifuge tube rack, some glue (I use "Household Goop" or "Duco" cement), and some scraps of wooden dowel, you can build a 16-tube stand for about $40.
