BISC413 Lab 4, Sept. 10: more literature and Flybase

Flies

Look at your flies. You don't need to do anything with them, just look at them in awe at the wonders of life.

Fly literature

Continue to research the literature on your flies, following the instructions in Tuesday's lab.

Lab report

Your lab report, which is due on Tuesday, Sept. 15, should contain the following:

  1. The basic information on your gene and your mutant allele that you got from Flybase.
  2. A list of the literature on your mutant that you're going to read. You can get this list of references from last year's term papers; from the reference lists of papers you read; from more recent papers that cite the older ones, that you find with Web of Science; and from Flybase. This reference list should follow the citation format given in the syllabus. After each reference, you should say how you'll read it: obtain it online, obtain it in print in the library, or get it via Interlibrary Loan. If you're getting stuff through Interlibrary Loan, you should order it today. Only you or your lab partner should order it, don't both order the same thing.
  3. A sketch of a proposed experiment. This will probably be a half-page to a page about what you plan to do, to investigate any possible selection on your gene. It can be an improved version of something someone did last year, something someone did in the literature, or a completely original idea.
