COLLEGE OF HUMAN SERVICES, EDUCATION & PUBLIC POLICY
INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY STUDIES
COURSE POLICIES
For efficiency and fairness to all, the following are course policies for IFST 221.
1.Students
are expected to read the following course policies and all course materials.I
view course materials, policies and the syllabus as a contract between
student and instructor.Ignorance
is no excuse so take the time to familiarize yourself with the material.
2.Students
are responsible for all materials, both verbal, written, and pictorial
that is given in class. If a student
is absent, it is his/her responsibility to obtain the missing material.Copies
of my lecture notes will not be provided.
3.It
is expected that all students will conduct themselves with honesty and
integrity in preparing assignments and taking exams. However,
should any student be suspected of academic dishonesty, a report will be
filed with the Office of Dean of Students in accordance with procedures
approved by the University Faculty Senate.Be
sure to familiarize yourself with University Policy on Academic Dishonesty,
found in the Student Guide to Policies or the following website:
http://www.udel.edu/stuhb/98-99deanstu/policy1#dishonesty.
4.Every
student is expected to be present for every examination and every discussion
class.The only exceptions are:
1.Illness
of the student (a current written medical excuse or photocopy ofa
prescription will do).
2.Death
in the immediate family.
3.Participation
in University approved athletic events (University notification is required).
4.University
recognized religious holidays with prior notification.
5.You
must have a duplicate of all assignments required in this course. This
will eliminate difficulties with missing papers.Remember,
you are to word process your assignments so take the time to save a backup
copy on a disk.You donot
have to make copies of your handwritten running notes.
6.All
assignments and papers are to be submitted to the instructor or assistants
in class on the dates specified in the course calendar.Five
points will be deducted for every day a paper is late.Do
no leave assignments under office doors, or give them to other faculty
in nearby offices, or attempt to give them to secretaries. The
secretaries are not permitted to accept any IFST 221 materials.
7.All
assignments are to be word processed and free of grammatical and spelling
errors.Points will be deducted
from any paper with poor grammar or faulty sentence structure.
8.Please
read your e-mail frequently.Periodically
we send messages and announcements to you in this manner.
9.Corrected
papers will be returned to students in class.Be
sure all of your papers include your name, and section number on the FRONT
and on the BACK of the last page.
10.Students
must be able to schedule a minimum of one hour per week for observation
in the laboratory preschool.Preschoolers
get sick, go on field trips, and vacations etc. Therefore,
it is important to keep ahead of observations as extra time is not given
to complete papers because of children’s illness, absences,
field trips, etc. Typically, preschool teachers notify your instructor
of planned field trips.I will announce
these trips in class or e-mail.However,
there are occasions when a special trip for the children comes up quickly
and I am unable to notify you in a timely manner. Therefore,
I repeat: Keep ahead of assignments.
11.Observation
assignments are a required part of the course.Failure
to complete the observation assignments will result in course failure regardless
of other course grades.Visually
impaired students should see the instructor regarding observation assignments.
12.A
student who does not sign in and out of the observation booth each
and every time he/she observes, will not have
his/her observation paper graded.Remember,
it is necessary to sign in and out even when observing the children on
the play yard.
13.Failure
to follow professional etiquette in observing and in maintaining confidentiality
regarding children observed, will result in student losing observation
privileges and consequently course failure.
14.The purpose of the discussion classes is to verbally share information with each other, therefore, discussion guide are to be completed prior to class. If you cannot attend a discussion class but give your discussion guide to us within 24 hours we will accept it.However, the maximum point value will be the assignment value for that discussion class. So, if a discussion guide is worth 20 points and you turn it in wthin 24 hours, the maximum grade you could receive is 10 points. After 24 hours no discussion assignments will be accepted unless a current valid medical excuse is attached.
15.You are encouraged to meet with us to discuss any IFST 221 concerns you may have.Contact the instructor or assistants for an appointment or stop in during our office hours.Remember to use e-mail when you can, it’s fast and efficient! When you contact us by e-mail please include your section number and name.A word of warning: do not respond to a 221 e-mail message.Instead, use individual e-mail addresses found on the first page of this document to contact us.If you respond to the 221 e-mail, everyone in class will get your message. You might not like your message being ready by everyone, and this practice you will contribute to over loading University e-mail system.
16.This couse is designed to help you be successful. You can earn points in discussion class, examinations, observation assignments and parent interview. To be fair to everyone no extra credit will be given.
PLEASE
REREAD THESE POLICIES.FAMILIARITY
WITH THESE POLICIES WILL ELIMINATE POTENTIAL PROBLEMS.
A
helpful hint: Students who follow directions for assignments do well. Please
take the time to read each assignment very carefully and then complete
assignments as directed.
