Design Project: (50%)

Project Summary:

The objective of this project is to design, fabricate and install a functional composter for the daily fish mortalities produced at the Blair View facility.  Because of the relatively low quantities of mortalities (less than 40 lbs per week) and the concerns regarding odor, a sealed rotating vessel composter will be developed.  The system will be located at the aquaculture facility, and configured with an electric motor for automatic turning.  The support frame will include forklift pockets so that the composter can be moved while at the facility.  Currently, dry poultry manure (i.e. from a storage shed) is available for mixing with the mortalities to adjust the C/N ratio to achieve the required temperature increase necessary for good composting.  Once operational, performance will be validated by periodically monitoring in-vessel compost temperature. 

Project Structure:

The class will work as a team on this design project as a semester long effort broken into three phases.  The expectations for each phase are:

The team revealed a viable and innovative design solution that is: aligned with customer needs, wants, and specifications; chosen from a variety of alternatives considered; and framed in the context of relevant technology benchmarks. The concept was proposed to the  sponsor  in an effective and professional manner, and an effective plan to design and demonstrate a proof of concept prototype was proposed.

Phase 2:

A system design was produced that continues to be aligned with customer needs, wants, and metrics, and framed in the context of relevant technology benchmarks; System components were designed and a complete drawing package was produced; and a plan to build and test a proof of concept prototype was proposed in an effective and professional manner.

Phase 3:

A proof of concept prototype was produced and tested that demonstrates the performance/cost viability of the system concept; which continues to be aligned with customer goals, wants, and metrics; and a plan to implement the concept in the sponsor's business was developed and proposed in an effective and professional manner.
