An individual is diagnosed with an eating disorder, if they have a severe disturbance in their eating behavior.  Surprisingly, most individuals with an eating problem tend to overeat.  However, for some people, the problem is the opposite.  One particular eating disorder leads to extreme under eating, possibly even starvation.  The disorder is anorexia nervosa.
Anorexia nervosa is a terrifying disorder that affects nearly 4% of young women in America.  This is a disorder that involves an exaggerated concern with gaining weight.  This obsession in most cases leads an individual to excessive exercising and dieting.  Some anorexic patients experience episodes of bulimia.  Bulimia Nervosa is a disorder in which individuals engage in eating binges, usually followed by purging--the use of vomiting, laxatives or enemas to get rid of the food.
The name 'anorexia' often suggests a loss of appetite or interest in food.  That assumption is false!  Many individuals with anorexia nervosa actually enjoy preparing food for others to consume, collecting recipes, and hoarding food they do not eat.
