Important: You will want to use the latest version of whatever browser you like to use (presumably netscape or Internet Explorer) since a lot of the browsers do not yet support the Java 2 platform. We will also look into using the Java plug-in to update browsers that do not support Java 2. You may also wish to investigate the latest version of SUN's own browser, called hotjava.
From the Netscape Developer's Java FAQ: "JavaSoft has released a new version of its Java Plug-in 1.2, which has support for JDK 1.2. Install it in your Netscape browser. In the future, with the Open Java Interface, you can change Communicator JVM, so it would be easy to use Sun JVM 1.2."
If you have a PC that you will be using to dial-up from home, you will need to use the PPP(Point-to-Point Protocol) for communication. In addition you will need another communications program called Exceed that allows you to display X-windows at home. The University will "lend" you a copy of Exceed. Go to the basement of Smith Hall for to get a copy of Exceed (I may have to sign a form for you).
There is also a version of this documentation for Windows .
