File: ~caviness/Class/CISC181013/student-readme. 2/4/94 ==================================================================== Welcome to class CISC181013. During this semester, you will be using central UNIX systems to complete class assignments. If you are already using a UNIX account, continue to use your old "username" and password. If you have never used a central UNIX system, you can get your account activated by bringing your Student ID card to the password-changing station in 002A Smith Hall or the Student Services Building. If your userid is still the original 5-digit number, you should select and change it to a username (e.g., marydoe, dprince) by typing the "username" command. Details on these operations are in the UNIX Handbook, available at the University Bookstore, and in the UNIX Hands-on Worksheet available in the CNS Reference Library (014 Smith). Getting started: ================ Prepare your account for this class by typing the command ~caviness/Class/CISC181013/student-setup Working on CISC181013 class assignments: ====================================== 1. To begin, type "newgrp 2004". 2. Begin your computing work. Files for your instructor's account are in the directory $CLASSHOME. For example, if you are told to print your instructor's file named "student-readme", you should refer to it by the full name $CLASSHOME/student-readme. This only works after you have typed the "newgrp 2004" command. 3. To end your work for this class, type "exit". Then, you can either log out or work on something else. If you forget the 4-digit project id (UNIX groupname) for the "newgrp" command, type the "chdgrp" command to refresh your memory. You will automatically see announcements your instructor posts. To review the contents of files in the CISC181013's "motd" ("message of the day") directory, use the following commands, called "aliases". What you type What the command displays -------------- ----------------------------------------- classinfo The contents of the most recently changed message file in the "motd" directory. classinfo "filename" The contents of the file named "filename" in the "motd" directory. listclassinfo A directory listing of the files in the "motd" directory. allclassinfo The filename and first 24 lines of every file in the "motd" directory. For example, typing "classinfo exam1-change" will display the contents of ~caviness/Class/CISC181013/motd/exam1-change.
