Experiencing Delaware through a study abroad lens
Over the University of Delaware’s Winter Session in January, Residence Life and Housing hosted the third annual Study at Home programming series.
Study at Home provides Winter Session students with cultural experiences aimed to mimic those experience a student may have while studying abroad.
“Students here for Winter Session should have an enriching experience that has co-curricular opportunities much like the fall and spring semesters,” said Christina King, assistant director for student engagement and assessment. “Students can break up the monotony of their class work, meet and engage with others on campus during winters, and try new experiences.”
This year’s programming lineup included: a student-led henna workshop, a flower arranging workshop, a paint night with a local artist, a Mediterranean themed cooking workshop with the College of Health Sciences, a Japanese book binding workshop led by Martha Carothers of the Department of Art and Design, and an experiential trip to the museums of the National Mall of Washington, D.C. Students on the trip enjoyed a shared meal at a Pakistani/ Indian influenced restaurant.
Students attended one, some, or all of these events.
“Student consistently inform us that they enjoy the unique and hands-on opportunities Study at Home provides,” King said. “All of the events have some aspect of art or culture to them, but offer delivery with a hands-on workshop or trip that allows students to have something to take with them.”
The Study at Home program has received a Bright Initiative award from the Division of Student Life at UD and has received national recognition as the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Commission for Housing and Residence Life recipient of the Outstanding Innovation award.
“Residence Life and Housing seeks to create communities and experiences through which students can learn and thrive. Study at Home allows students an opportunity to explore something new, challenge themselves, and engage with a diverse group of people, while completing a common goal or share experience,” said King.
