Oct. 21: Open Access Week
University Library to mark Open Access Week with talk by Duke's Kevin Smith
8:25 a.m., Sept. 21, 2015--The University of Delaware Library has announced that Kevin Smith, director of the Office of Copyright and Scholarly Communication at Duke University Libraries, will be the keynote speaker for UD’s celebration of Open Access Week.
Smith will speak on “The Meaning of Publication in the Digital Age, or What Open Access Can Do for You” in the Morris Library Reading Room at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21. A reception will follow.

Smith is both a librarian and an attorney experienced in copyright and technology law. At Duke, Smith teaches and advises faculty, librarians, administrators and students about copyright, intellectual property licensing and scholarly publishing.
Duke’s Scholarly Communications Office supports the university’s research, teaching and service mission by providing guidance in matters relating to the dissemination and use of knowledge.
Smith holds a master’s degree in library science from Kent State University and has worked as an academic librarian in both liberal arts colleges and specialized libraries. His strong interest in copyright law began in library school and he received a law degree from Capital University in 2005.
Before moving to Duke in 2006, Smith served as the director of the Pilgrim Library at Defiance College in Ohio, where he also taught Constitutional law. He is admitted to the bar in Ohio and North Carolina.
Smith is active in the American Library Association and a frequent speaker on copyright issues that affect the academic community. He is widely respected and influential among his peers working in scholarly communication and publishes a widely read blog.
Last summer, Smith, Anne Gilliand of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Lisa Macklin of Emory University taught a four-week course, Copyright for Educators and Librarians, through Coursera.
